Chennai Metro Extends Its Reach: New Lines To Parandur Airport And Avadi

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is gearing up for a significant expansion, with plans to extend its network to the upcoming Parandur airport and the industrial hub of Avadi. The state government has approved the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for two new corridors connecting:

  • Poonamallee to Parandur: This 43.63 km elevated line will have 19 stations and is estimated to cost Rs 10,712 crore. It will serve as an extension of the existing Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor under Phase 2 and provide direct metro access to the new airport, planned over 4,500 acres. Passengers will be able to reach the terminals directly, unlike the current situation at Meenambakkam Airport.
  • Koyambedu to Avadi: This 16.07 km elevated line will have 15 stations and is estimated to cost Rs 6,376.18 crore. It will be an extension of the Madhavaram-Sholinganallur corridor under Phase 2 and cater to the needs of residents and workers in Avadi and nearby industrial areas.
