The Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs recently revealed that a forthcoming Urban Housing Scheme, featuring a subsidy on home loan interest, is in its final stages of development. This initiative, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address last year, is currently being fine-tuned by the Union Government. It is intended to supplant the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAYU), which ceased catering to the Middle Income Group (MIG) category in March 2021. The new scheme will prioritise offering subsidies on home loans for urban areas, aiming to alleviate financial strain on middle-class families renting in urban locales.
